Why is FDA approval important to you and your veterinarian?

Especially made for horses

FDA review and approval gives you and your veterinarian the peace of mind that your horse is being treated with a drug that's designed specifically to work well in horses (not for use in humans, dogs, etc). What's more, PRASCEND is tested and labeled to treat the cause of various PPID clinical signs, such as laminitis and shaggy hair coat that may be making your horse seem older than it really is. When you treat the cause, not just the signs, you have a better likelihood of getting good results.

Tested and Trusted

The FDA approval also means that PRASCEND has stood up to rigorous testing to ensure that it is consistently manufactured and maintains stability. You can be confident that independent scientists and FDA officials have reviewed study results to make sure PRASCEND works as expected to help your horse improve.

Consistent Strength and Stability

In addition, the FDA approval means that only Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc. can make PRASCEND. The PRASCEND brand of pergolide you give your horse comes only from our state-of-the-art facilities, not from various compounders that may produce pergolide inconsistently. This means you can count on each batch of PRASCEND to be the same high quality and to remain at full strength through the expiration date listed on its packaging when stored properly per the directions on the package insert (such as in a cool, dry place).

Why does this matter? Because PRASCEND is the same strength from batch to batch, so it's much easier for your veterinarian to prescribe the correct amount of PRASCEND for your horse. Evaluations of each batch show that it is consistent, safe, and effective.

Important safety information

PRASCEND is for use in horses only. Treatment with PRASCEND may cause loss of appetite. Most cases are mild. Weight loss, lack of energy, and behavioral changes also may be observed. If severe, a temporary dose reduction may be necessary. PRASCEND has not been evaluated in breeding, pregnant, or lactating horses and may interfere with reproductive hormones in these horses. Using PRASCEND at the same time as drugs known as dopamine antagonists should be avoided. These drugs may diminish the effectiveness of PRASCEND. If your horse is especially sensitive to pergolide mesylate or similar products, PRASCEND should not be used. Refer to the package insert for complete product information.
